He was a 30 year old sportsman with no history of hypertension or heart disease. While playing basketball he suddenly collapsed and died. Autopsy findings revealed that he had Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Diagnosis of this condition is based on gross morphology and microscopic examination of the cardiac tissue.

Too young to die, Doc. So, macrosopically heart can look normal. So how do you discover that to a sportsman with no history of hypertension or heart disease. As a sportsman you’re checked at least twice a year. At least.

Monica,in some cases there are no clinical symptoms and ECG findings are normal, so check up does not help. These are dangerous cases as patient can die suddenly and changes in the heart is diagnosed only by pathologists by postmortem examination. If abnormal ECG and echocardiographic findings are present then precautions can be taken. This is a genetic disease and possibly someone in the family has the disease. So family history is important. However, in other patients there are clear symptoms of heart failure and diagnosis is much easier. Unfortunately, this disease mostly occurs in young patients and children.
